Travelling with strangers is not a new idea 🇸🇬

Travelling with strangers is not too different from joining a guided tour. Since its inception 50 years ago, tour operators like Chan Brothers have become the default way for many people to travel out of Singapore. But let’s be honest if you grew up with the internet, you are probably like me and dislike joining inflexible box-ticking guided tours. To make matters worse, guided tours are often sold at a 200-300% markup.
High tour prices are inevitable.. Or are they?
Since incorporating Sotravel a couple of months ago, we have also incorporated a lot of the burden of the travel industry. We know how quickly the cost of travelling can increase when you factor in office spaces, tour guides, and marketing.
Which is why we got rid of all of them. Our office space is where ever our laptops are. We don’t hire any guides, but we do have community hosts! As for marketing, we are constantly praying to the TikTok algorithm as well as relying on our beloved community to help spread the word.
By constantly challenging the status quo, we are stripping the tour industry down to just the essential pieces that are required to create an amazing group travel experience. Right now, we are able to launch most of our trips at cost price – i.e. the price you would pay if you were to try and plan your own trip. That’s quite a feat if I say so myself!
Okay.. But I still don’t like guided tours

Me too. This is why since our inception, we have only released fun social trips like skiing, surfing, outdoor climbing and diving. Trips that are a lot more fun with more people joining in. Besides, we know how important age is for relatability, which is why we set up age groups for each trip.
Our trips often center around a specific adventurous activity, but we definitely encourage our participants to hang out before and after the trip if they want to.

Are you sure it’s more fun?
In 2021 I experienced my virgin “Sotravel experience”. I was on my university overseas exchange and I chanced upon a club at Imperial College that does annual ski trips for Singaporeans living in London. Honestly, I joined it cause it was cheap and not because I was thinking of making new friends. But damn was that one of the best weeks of my exchange. In just one week, I made more friends than I had in an entire year. And I don’t mean “friends” that I will never see again, but friends that I am meeting again for another ski trip this year.
Travelling compresses a year’s worth of friendship into 5 days

Well think about it – instead of spending 15 minutes together every single day for an entire year, adventuring together compresses the friend-making experience to just 5 days. You will ski together, fall together, learn together, and laugh together. Making new friends is not rocket science.
Okay sorry, who are you again?
